What’s special about Team 33 is how diverse we are. We not only have future engineers in our hive, but we also have kids, like me, who contribute to the team in different ways.
Almost all of the people who join robotics do it to learn about how the STEM industry works. They have brains that work like two gears, turning around and around, constantly in motion, coming up with new ideas on how to build and create things to change the world. My brain, however, is the exact opposite. The right side of my brain is more dominant than the left side. If someone were to walk inside my mind, they would find ideas for stories, daydreams, and adjectives waiting to describe things. I don’t think scientifically; I think more creatively. My thoughts are scattered, full of random ideas floating in the air, waiting to come together and land, like an airplane.
My dream career is to work in the movie industry. Whether it is to become an actress, producer, or director, I want to see my scattered ideas take form and sail. The best I can compare it to would be the way engineers make machines: it starts as a few ideas, things that they think they need to improve in the world. Then those few ideas come together into a brainstorm of what needs to be done to create the project. That list of necessities turns into a design and that design turns into a prototype. If the first prototype doesn’t work, they make a second. Then a third. Then a fourth. They keep trying until they work all the bugs out and it’s just right. Meetings are made, the idea is passed, and pretty soon, their invention is public, changing the world. Creative thinkers share the same process.
So, you’re probably wondering, ‘then why did you join the robotics team?’ I’ll tell you why. I was aimlessly walking around the hallway after a school kickoff for freshman and found the Killer Bees demonstrating their robot. I went to take a look, thinking, ‘that’s cool, but so not for me’. Two of the girls saw me and rushed over to introduce themselves. They began telling me what their team was about and how cool it was to be a Bee. I nodded my head, a little intrigued. Then they told me how they have a group who works on everything but the robot, including videos. My ears pricked open and listened to them intently. I quickly signed myself up, did an interview, and here I am today. I now work in the CAD room, creating all sorts of videos: recaps, slideshows, and the Chairman’s Award video. I am learning so much about leadership and skills that I will need when pitching ideas for my future movies.
The Killer Bees is helping me reach my goal. But this is just one story coming from one Bee. Every single member of this team has a tale that goes along with the reason they joined. What makes this team special is how dedicated and excited everyone is to learn. Every one of these kids on Team 33 is going somewhere. Whether it’s becoming an engineer, a marketer, or a film director, Team 33 produces the next generation of successful people. We are the kids who will be inventing the flying car. We are the kids who will be producing the next Star Wars. We are Team 33, the Killer Bees.
